WEEN Academy Mentor Spotlight: Dianell Hudson
Why did you decide to be a WEEN Academy Mentor?
I wanted to be able to help a young lady in this industry get started on their career path and give them some of the advice I wish someone had given me.
Tell us one interesting fact about your personal/or professional background that served as groundwork for you to become a mentor?
I have worked in almost every facet of production and many different areas of entertainment, I feel I have a lot of tidbits to offer. I feel my strongest asset is connecting with people and making them comfortable in all settings.
How did you build your personal/professional brand?
I built my brand with hard work and a lot of follow up. I stay connected with people that are doing the things I want to do. I’ve also worked for free from time to time, to show my worth and make them realize they need me.
What are two gems that you wish someone would have told you about the business?
1. I wish someone had shared with me that it’s not as glamours as it looks, there is a lot of “baby sitting” and “hurry up and waiting”
2. Working in entertainment can kill your personal life!
Who is/was your most significant mentor and why?
A lady named Leola Westbrook, without her I would not have moved so smoothly into my first job at MTV. Jill Dickerson, she’s currently a SVP at OWN but I learned so much from just working with her.
What are some things that you are doing to make the entertainment business a better place for women?
I honestly don’t have an answer for that. I hire women but the industry is hard on women and it really makes you make a hard choice on how much of you want to give it.
Who would play you in a modern day movie about your life and why?
I never thought of that. I have no idea
What do you consider to be your biggest accomplishment?
My biggest accomplishment is birthing an entrainment show from inception.
Famous or not: Name one woman who embodies what you think a real woman is and explain. Dead or alive
Jill Scott. I believe she truly is every woman. Women can relate to her and men love her. She’s an artist, an activist and a mother.
Tell us something about you that people do not know?
People that work with me don’t know that I’m a ‘”house music head”. I love music over all but there is a release in house music
